Seven individuals suspected of participating in the gang rape of a woman in a village in Bomet have been apprehended as of Thursday.

The arrests were prompted by the circulation of a distressing video on social media depicting the woman being assaulted by a group of men within a residence.

In the footage reviewed by the Star, the victim's cries for help are audible amidst the group's coercion for her compliance.

According to law enforcement, the incident occurred in Chebanyi village, Kimaya, Chepalungu.

Referred to as the "Sigor Boys" video, authorities, accompanied by the local chief and community elders, conducted a successful operation resulting in the capture of the seven suspects.

Identification of two suspects has been confirmed, while efforts to identify additional perpetrators are ongoing.

Police have affirmed their commitment to presenting the suspects in court and seeking an extension of their detention as investigations progress.

The reprehensible act, which transpired in December 2023, has triggered widespread condemnation online, with demands for robust measures to combat such atrocities.

Additional detectives have been deployed to the area to facilitate a thorough investigation.

Under the law, gang rape carries a potential life sentence. Per legislation, individuals involved in rape or defilement, acting in concert with others, are deemed guilty of gang rape, subjecting them to imprisonment for a minimum of 15 years, with the possibility of a life sentence upon conviction.
